Memory Assessments
What is a Memory Assessment?
What is Memory?
Memory refers to the psychological processes of acquiring, storing, retaining, and later retrieving information. There are three major processes involved in memory: encoding, storage, and retrieval.
Human memory involves the ability to both preserve and recover information. However, this is not a flawless process. Sometimes people forget or misremember things. Other times, information is not properly encoded in memory in the first place.
Memory problems are often relatively minor annoyances, like forgetting birthdays. However, they can also be a sign of serious conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and other kinds of dementia. These conditions affect quality of life and ability to function.
Why A Memory Assessment?
By accurately assessing cognitive functioning, we can develop tailored intervention strategies and accommodations to maximize an individual’s cognitive potential and enhance their everyday functioning. Our comprehensive cognitive assessments empower adults to overcome cognitive challenges, optimize their mental abilities, and enhance their overall quality of life.
Memory assessments are usually done if there’s a suspicion of mental decline or impairment. You may have noticed such a decline yourself or a close friend or family member may have noticed.
Memory assessments can also be done to provide you with a baseline knowledge of your memory abilities so that any changes in memory can be identified early.
Basic Memory Assessment
We assess if your memory is intact by looking at problem descriptors. We provide you with an overview of psychological functioning and evaluate the status your short-term memory and long-term memory.
Comprehensive Memory Assessment
We provide more specific memory and psychological measures and are looking at formulating a diagnosis if there is one.
Combined Memory Assessment and Mental Well-Being Check
We provide an overview of your psychological and cognitive functioning by looking at problem descriptors. Potential areas of struggle are found and, if applicable, treatment recommendations are provided.
